Had a fun weekend in beautiful Riverside, CA. I stayed at the historical Mission Inn. I would have liked to do some hiking at the Santa Ana River Trail but was busy working on a podcast and enjoying being alone in my own hotel room. Tried to out crazy Britney but no one out crazies Britney Spears.

I saw a lot of Riverside homeless but it would have been rude to photograph them.

I hiked Mt Baldy in the Los Ángeles National Fore

I hiked Mt Baldy in the Los Ángeles National Forest yesterday. There was snow on the ground in May but it felt like 70 degrees. I guess that’s why they called it Icehouse Canyon. People were wearing tshirts.

I hiked to Cedar Glen and then attempted to make my way to Icehouse Saddle. However my passage was blocked by snow three quarters of the way. As I retraced my steps back to Cedar Glen I realized how steep the trail was, in addition to being narrow and covered in scree and snow that was icy because it was melting. And there were numerous fallen trees blocking the way. My hike had turned into a mountain climb.

I really think they should have a sign there warning people that the trail is still blocked by snow. I did not expect to end up climbing a snowy mountain so close to East Los Angeles. This year 100 people became lost at Mt Baldy and six people died.

But the scenery was so beautiful so I have to give Mt Baldy a good rating.

This is me meeting a southern white rhinoceros and her calf! They are like big horses because they are from the same evolutionary branch. They are acclimated to people and are very docile. But you have to be careful not to put your hand in the fence because they might lean in and accidentally break your hand. I wonder who was the first person to figure that out?
