Many disturbing new trends have appeared on Instagram, including cutting, bulimia, anorexia, drug addiction and narcissistic personality disorder.
Hashtags are a great way to interact on Instagram. Social media experts build a following by using tags relevant to their target audience. People are more likely to follow someone that shares a common interest with them, or like an image that is relevant to their keyword phrase.
This isn’t another rant about selfies. Posting a lot of food porn is one thing but it’s a minor annoyance, and people should stop bitching about it. If you like posting funny pictures of your cat then I say more power to you. These are the kinds of Instagram accounts that make you wonder why they’re so popular, and what that says about the human condition.
The Depressed Emo
Hashtags: #lonely #suicidal #ana #selfharmmm #dead #sad #quotes #depressione #cut #fat #depressionquotes #cuts #alone #love #anorexic #depression #anorexia #worthless #suicide #broken #mia #scars #secretsociety_123 #ugly #depressed #sadness #cutting #anxiety #wiccans #grunge #annie #deb #self_harm #bulimia #bullying #society #selfhate #insecure #teen
The depressed emo type of Instagram feed is immensely popular, with hashtags mostly related to teen depression, eating disorders and cutting. As of this blog posting there are 3,778,048 images that have been hashtagged #cutting and popular users with names like @distressedlol and @_cutting_boy. A lot of them are too graphic for me to post here.
A surprising amount of these suicidal social media accounts seem to also have issues with weight, which says a lot about the society that we live in today, when depression and binging is regarded as a trend rather than a problem. You may be depressed now, but wait until you learn about the people in third world countries who don’t have access to clean drinking water, education or adequate healthcare.
The Drug Addict

We all like to indulge in our vices once in a while, maybe on the weekend at a dance party downtown, but we don’t all record photographic evidence of that experience for the world to see – EVERY DAY, and oftentimes while operating a motor vehicle. I don’t know if you realize, but the police know about Instagram as well, and they’re probably wondering where you got all of the Xanny bars, blow and codeine syrup. Even the stoner Instagram accounts think you should get help.
The Exercise Addict
Hashtags: #flex #motivation #shredded #gym #focus #lifestyle #squat #dedication #tflers #fitnessgear #grind #cardio #grow #trainhard #strength #pushpullgrind #fit #swole #grindout #instafitness #tagsforlikes #gymlife #eatclean #fitness #ripped #muscle #bigbench #instafit #sweat #shesquats #fitchick #fitgirl #instapicture #girlswithmuscle #gymrat #fitnessmodel
At some point you’ve seen a person’s abs so many times that it starts to resemble a weird, amorphous blog instead of a human being. This person is a positive exercise addict, rather than the sad anorexic accounts we discussed previously. Exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, but like all things in life, some people take it way too far. There is a line somewhere between getting in shape and tagging your orange, sinewy glutes to everyone you have ever met in the gym on the daily and it is called a dysmorphic disorder.
The Narcissistic Model
Hashtags: #emomodel #cosmo #goth #bands #purplehair #altmodel #altgirl #alternativemodel #cosmogirls #model #beautiful #fashion #seattlemodels #altporn #photoshoot #tattooedmodel #inked #tattoogirl #commercial #boygirl #inkeddoll #ink #tattooed #girlswithtatts #modified #inkbabes #bunnyears #inkedup #inkedbabe #deadchick #girlswithplugs #inkedmodel
Sex sells and models are among the most followed users on Instagram. We’re glad that you’re a model and all, but post a photo that isn’t of your own booty every once in a while. There are a lot of nice things you could photograph to prove that you are a human being with thoughts and feelings, such as the food you are eating, the city that you live in, a hilarious meme that really gets you, or a pretty drawing. For example every single one of the Suicide Girls loves Star Wars and Harry Potter.
Those Damn Bots
Hashtags: #mylove #sombrero #sempretu #thanks #beautiful #cute #fashion #love #instatamil #instalike #tbt #instadaily #instamood #friends #girl #me #saree #tflers #tamil #instagood #traditional #food #amazing #bestoftheday #fun #smile #photooftheday #picoftheday #happy #life #nature #photogenic #sfs #tumblr #california #follow4follow #follow #ocean
Anyone that only posts selfies could potentially be one of these guys stealing images from a real person. Bots, or fake accounts, are created by users who are trying to cheat the system. They may be selling fake accounts, catfishing naïve victims, spamming and trolling innocent users, or just bored enough to make a user profile for their cat. Bots aren’t human and are not capable of loving your nifty pictures about depression, drugs, food and ass.
